Gladsome Light:
Liturgical Hymns of the Russian Church

St. Panteleimon Choir of St. Petersburg

"The blended voices of this small a cappella choral ensemble seem to soar across time and space. As the music floats heavenward, you can almost feel the glow of a thousand candles illuminating the ancient icons of the cathedral …."  Old and new liturgical songs of the Russian Orthodox Church performed in a traditional, rural folk style. An intimate sound evoking a small country monastery.

The music is traditional-style chants and liturgical songs of the Russian Orthodox Church. Some dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, while some was composed recently by the choir's director, Alexei Zakharov, who also teaches at the St. Petersburg Academy of Culture and the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary.
